The base function of Nabucco Pipeline is the transportation of natural gas through the pipeline from the Caspian region and Middle East to Europe.
The operating philosophy has been developed to have safe and effective transportation from inlet points to offtake points in an integrated system with upstream and downstream infrastructures.
The whole operating system and the metering system will exist with the Main Control Centre to Sub Control Centre and Local Control Centres and National Control Centres and Compressor Stations and Main Valve Stations as a very well synchronised, international and common utility which is based on nerves and brain of natural gas transportation by the pipeline control system.
Pipeline Control System
The most important part of the operation phase of natural gas transportation as organiser and controller is the Pipeline Control System with several functions like:

Process Control System
This system will provide control of all process equipment associated with the station. The PCS shall be a high reliability system, consisting of components of the latest technology of this discipline.
Emergency Shut Down System
The ESD system is based on the guidance for the safe shutdown of pipelines and their facilities if there is an incident such as a leak, fire, etc. The system isolates individual sections of the pipeline following the decision of the operator of the MCC. The reference standard that shall be adopted will include a systematic safety lifecycle approach and a safety instrumented system to ensure that all necessary activities are carried out to achieve functional safety.
Fire and Gas Detection System
The Nabucco pipeline will have an integrated fire and gas detection system based on the reference standard. The structured system at the control points will monitor the F&G status for all stations along the pipeline.
Telecommunication Backbone System
A data communication backbone will provide highly reliable, real time data transfer between the technical participants of the pipeline structure. It will provide the users with different possibilities for data and voice communication through internet, wireless and wire.
Pipeline Leak Detection System
Reducing the risk of technical failure is crucial for the smooth operation of the pipeline and for the transport of natural gas to the customers. If the system detects any leak on the pipeline then an alert will be sent out and any necessary repairs will be made.
Permit to Work System
A permit to work system will operate along the entire Nabucco pipeline.
Earthquake Detection System
The system will include ground motion detection equipment and associated signal processing to give advance warning of any potential earthquake to the monitoring team. This detection will be linked to the existing European earthquake detection system on the whole length of the pipeline.
Corrosion Monitoring System
The pipeline will also include a Corrosion Monitoring system to provide an online health status of the mechanical components, based on the condition of the technical elements along the whole pipeline.
Security System
The pipeline system will also include special devices for the safe construction and operation of the pipeline, supported by CCTV.
Condition Monitoring System
The system will also include a Condition Monitoring system, which will provide an online health status of the mechanical components based on elements of the process control system.
